Łukasz Niesiołowski–Spanò is Professor of Ancient History at the University of Warsaw.

He graduated from the Institute of History, University of Warsaw (1997), and completed his PhD in Ancient History at the University of Warsaw in 2002. He received his habilitation in 2013 with the monograph: Dziedzictwo Goliata. Filistyni i Hebrajczycy w czasach biblijnych (2012) (English translation: Goliath’s Legacy. Philistines and Hebrews in Biblical Times, (Philippika 83), Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz Verlag, 2016).

He has published numerous books and articles on different aspects of the history and religion of ancient Palestine and the Hebrew Bible.

Previously, Niesiołowski–Spanò was PI of research projects funded by the Polish Ministry of Higher Education and Science (2013-2017) and the National Science Centre, Poland (2017-2021). He received scholarships from the Italian government (research stay in Rome, 2001) and the Andrew Mellon Foundation (research stay at the CSIC in Madrid, 2005). He was a post-doc fellow at the University of Notre Dame (2005/2006), and Visiting Professor at the University of Notre Dame (2009) and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (2016).

His main research interests are the history and religion of ancient Palestine, Hebrew Bible historiography, and the relations between the Israelites/Judahites and their neighbors.

In the current project, he leads a research team at the University of Warsaw, focusing on the texts – biblical and extra-biblical – and their interpretation in light of the history of religion during the Persian and early Hellenistic periods.
